I was born Rose Gilman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a Fine Arts Student. I've always enjoyed traveling. At eleven years old, I went to Cuba. During high school, I spent a summer at Inter-American University, Saltillo, Mexico. The following summer, still in high school, I traveled for three months around the US with my younger sister on a $99 for 99 days (!) Greyhound special I'd saved up for all year.
After several other trips to Europe, I left the United States for about six years. My travels started in England, then took me to Turkey and by boat to Israel where I worked for six months on a Kibbutz. After, I went via Cypress to Southern Turkey, and embarked on an overland journey through Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal, where I lived for almost 3 months. I went back to India, where I spent four and one half years in Auroville, South India and met my husband, AndrĂ©, from Strasbourg France. Our son, Taija, was born there in 1976. We have a daughter, Riva, who was born near Tonasket, WA in 1981.  I have three grandchildren, Dylan (2002), Troy (2005), Sawyer (2007).
I hold a diploma from the St Nicholas Centre for Montessori Education in London, England. I received my Washington teaching certificate in 1990 and earned a MA in Education with emphasis and endorsement in ESL from Heritage College in 1994. I have taught 7th, Transitional 1st and 3rd grades at Tonasket Elementary School.
